N + + + + d WHY DID CHRIST DIE FOR US? - 2 1 THESSALONIANS 5:9-10 INTRODUCTION 1 THESS. 5:9-10 - For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. Paul declares to the church at Thessalonica that Christ died for us. Do we ever stop and contemplate why he was willing to do that for you and me? Christ gives us his mission statement in the gospel of Luke LUKE 19:10 We know he came to seek and save the lost but why did he die. It was so salvation would be available for you and me. WHY DID CHRIST DIE? OBEDIENCE TO HIS FATHER Because he submitted to the will of his Father. MATT. 26:39-42 Jesus knew there was no other way for the will of the Father to be accomplished if he was not willing to die for us. So he went to the cross of Calvary. JN. 8:27-29 Jesus did only those things that pleased the Father and so he fulfilled the will of the Father with his death. JN. 10:31-38 Christ died to prove his deity that he was indeed the Son of God. JN. 17:1-5 Christ died to glorify the Father and finish the works God gave him to do. FELLOWSHIP WITH HIS CREATION Sin separated us from God and he desired fellowship with us. 1 COR. 1:9 We could not have fellowship with God if it were not for the sacrifice of Christ. We are called to this fellowship by the gospel. EPH. 3:8-11 Fellowship is accomplished according to the eternal purpose of God but it was accomplished in Jesus Christ. PHIL. 2:1 Fellowship is in Christ. 1 JN. 1:3-7 John explains how we enjoy this fellowship by walking in the light. ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM You cannot have a kingdom without a king and Jesus did not become king until he was victorious over death. MARK 9:1 Jesus spoke of this kingdom when he was on earth. He pointed out there were some living at that time that would not die till they saw this kingdom come. ACTS 1:8 Apostles asked about the coming of this kingdom. ACTS 2:1-4 It came as promised with power in Jerusalem. COL. 1:13 It is in existence today. JN. 3:5 If you are born again you are in this kingdom. It is very strange that those who speak of this new birth - being born again do not believe the kingdom is present with us today 1 PET. 1:1, 18-23 How was this being born again possible? By the shedding of the precious blood of Christ. BRING US TO GOD The death of Jesus made a way to God possible for mankind. 1 PET. 3:18 Christ suffered to bring us to God the just suffering for the unjust. JN. 14:6 Jesus is the only way to come to the Father. MATT. 11:28-30 Jesus invites us to come to him because he is the Savior. GOOD SHEPHERD Just as a shepherd is willing to give his life in protection of the flock. Jesus is the good shepherd because he did just that. JN. 10:11, 15, 17 Jesus is the good shepherd because he makes eternal life possible. HEB. 13:20-21 Jesus is the great shepherd of all the sheep because he offered his blood. 1 PET. 2:25 We are in need of the care of a shepherd. Man left to himself will go the wrong way. There is a way which seems right to a man REV. 7:17 Jesus will even shepherd his sheep in heaven by leading them to living fountains of water. CONCLUSION Did you know Christ died for you?
